obama angry and describing him as having an accent. it's not subtle but i'm sure they think it's great politics. so tonight has been an unsettled big night. tomorrow night is going to make tomorrow look like a traffic camera on a desert highway. i'll be here in new york. chris matthews will be in denver.

video at a press conference where obama says nothing news worthy. that was explosive tape, not at all. last month it was the drudge report, which means the romney c campaign, it was them again dousing themselves in gasoline and pulling the fire alarm as what was hyped as outrageous video of president obama saying he believes in redistribution. specifically it was that he believes essentially in the progressive tax code that we have had in this country for a time period that's more easily measured in centuries than in individual years. again, not exactly a bomb shell. now they are dousing themselves in gasoline and hitting the fire alarm all over again over a video of president obama speaking as a candidate in 2007. in this video, which the right is very excited about tonight but which has been available online since 2007, mr. obama, then a candidate, acknowledges the presence in the room of his former pastor from chicago, reverend jeremiah wright. steve smith was part of the strategic team in 2008 when they decided that they would not attack barack

president obama did not win the first debate against mitt romney. whether or not you're happy about that, he didn't win. but if your takeaway from this conspiracy theory in this debate is the reason the president didn't win is because mitt romney cheated, then what is the utility of that theory for you? what is the utility of that information? how do you think president obama should then prepare for the second debate? should he just do exactly what he did this past wednesday night, except keep a closer eye out for the cheating because that is the only reason he lost? i mean, it may be comforting to tell yourself this is what really went wrong here but that is not really what went wrong here, and making the case that it was what went wrong does not help your candidate. the worst example of this though, the invention of a comforting new parallel reality that does not mean you have to face hard truths. the worst new instance of this is how the right today responded to the new jobs numbers. today the unemployment rate dropped from 8.1% to 7.8%. it didn'

the obama campaign -- they did a smart thing today. got up bright and early this morning realizing they took a loss last night and began pointing out where governor romney had not said what he said before, had not stuck to the truth. however, we learned again last night, if we needed reminding, that there's power in taking the view. listen, i'm frequently in error, but never in doubt. i believe what i'm telling you. and that carries its own power and strength. >> especially when you're talking to 50 million or 60 million people at a time. that is a perfect segue to everything we're doing in the rest of the hour on this show. dan rather, always such an honor to have you. >> thank you, rachel. enjoy to be on. >> "dan rather reports" is on axs tv. okay. we'll be right back. overmany discounts to thine customers! yoo does the obama campaign have that option? >> i don't think so. >> i think the first debate will be remembered for romney one and two, big bird. and that is the image that will be on saturday night live. the only way to turn that to his advantage is to call him out on it and use the results of the first debate to improve his performance. remember, he went into a preevent defense and sitting on his lead. he is a good performer and good guy. >> jonathan, thank you for being here. i was excited to talk about this and i interrupted you a lot, i'm sorry. it turns out we have an unfortunate scoop. and it is out of pennsylvania and that story is coming up next. stay with us. >>> before the big unaffordable news, on tuesday of this week, something big happened. on tuesday a pennsylvania judge ruled that voters don't need a voter id to vote in this year's election. voter rules that were going to dinnen franchise up to one in eight voters in that big swing state were put on hold. but whether or not voters don't participate in this elect

our view is obama has done a poor job. everything he did that was wrong was when he had overwhelming democratic support. it's appropriate to ask now, how did that work out? and then he added this. he said, quote, i'm pretty confident the american people are not going to go back to 2009 and 2010 and let the other side have total control of the government. total control of the government? think about that for a second. mitch mcconnell is talking about democrats controlling the senate and the white house and democrats controlling the house. i mean, few people other than nancy pelosi and other house democrats are talking about the democrats conceivably taking control of the house. but mitch mcconnell seems to think that's a possibility. as the republican leader in the senate, mitch mcconnell is most concerned with senate seats and that's what he's backstopping here when pitching to donors. but the pitch he's making to republican donors is amazing. he's pitching that republicans need to work hard and collect your hard-earned mo
